Dry Needle Therapy

Acupuncture needles being appliedKirwan Complete Care is proud to offer an alternative therapy to those in need. Dry needling, also known as intramuscular stimulation, is a modern treatment that utilises solid filiform needles (acupuncture needles) or hollow-core hypodermic needles to ease muscular pain without medication or injection. By strategically placing the needles in trigger points, unwanted knots, pains, and spasms are successfully relieved.

Benefits

Predominantly comprised of several acupuncture techniques, dry needling focuses on reducing presenting physical symptoms. Dry needling is useful for a wide range of acute and chronic orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, including neck and back pain, shoulder stiffness, hamstring problems, jaw discomfort, muscular tightness, rotator cuff issues, shin splints, sports-induced injuries, and tendonitis.

How does dry needling differ from acupuncture?

Dry needling is made up of acupuncture techniques derived from the Ming dynasty, but uses a “dry” needle rather than needles containing medicinal substances. In traditional Chinese medicine, the use of needles on trigger points and painful areas is termed “ahshi” needling. This particular methodology has evolved within the last few decades with the goal of treating musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Unlike acupuncture, dry needling is performed around the problem site with only one needle.

Who does it help?

People of all ages and conditions can benefit from this technique. Many patients interested in dry needling previously struggled to find lasting pain relief through traditional therapies. From sprains and overuse injuries to fibromyalgia this therapy has proven helpful to many desperate to obtain pain relief.

Have No Fear

We understand that needle nerves are common, but be assured that the procedure is safe, and the sensation of the needle is rarely felt. If anything, the feeling resembles a small twitch as the muscle is stimulated. While most patients are afraid of pain, most people describe their first introduction to dry needling as simply “awkward” or “weird.” Before and during your session, we are glad to provide any explanation that might make you feel more comfortable.
